Opening Times and Out of Hours Service
As of Saturday 31st October 2020 we are making some changes to the way we work and we wanted to keep you updated.
Changes to our Out of Hours Emergency Service
If your pet needs veterinary care outside of opening hours please call our branches on the usual numbers – 01873 857544 / 01495 305465. Your call will be put through to a qualified veterinary nurse who will discuss the case with you and advise you if your pet needs to see a vet. Up until 10.30pm each weekday evening, one of our own vets will be available to treat your pet in either Abergavenny or Ebbw Vale. If you call after 10.30pm on a week night, or after 6pm on a Saturday or Sunday, they will advise you to contact the Vets Now emergency hospital in Newport to arrange for treatment.
Changes to our Opening Hours
As of Saturday 31st October we will be opening from 8.30am to 6pm on both Saturday and Sunday every weekend in one of our branches. We will be offering this weekend service alternately in Abergavenny and Ebbw Vale. As such there will be routine appointments available at each location every other weekend. We will continue to open between 8.30am and 6pm every weekday but we will also be adding some evening sessions as well. Initially there will be only one to two evening sessions per week, but as we continue we intend to add more evenings in both Abergavenny and Ebbw Vale depending on demand.
Why we are making these changes
For several years we have shared our out of hours cover with Abbey Veterinary Centre in Abergavenny. Between the two practices we have been able to provide emergency veterinary care locally in Abergavenny 24 hours a day. Unfortunately, due to changing circumstances we are no longer able to continue this arrangement.
As a small, independent practice we only have a small team of 4 vets and 6 nurses on the out of hours rota. In order to maintain the welfare and work life balance of our staff we are unable to provide 24 hour cover 7 days a week with these staff alone.
It is important to us, however, to continue to provide as much of your pet’s care as we can. We believe that access to local veterinary care with a vet that knows your pet’s clinical history is as important out of hours as it is during the day. Our new Out of Hours service is designed to provide this for as many of our patients as possible whilst allowing our staff to have a full nights sleep. From experience we know that most emergency calls come in before about 10.30pm. By providing our own local care up until this time, there should only be a very few cases that need to travel to the emergency Vets Now hospital in Newport.
