Kristine Smets MRCVS
I qualified in Ghent, Belgium in 1996 and spent most of my early career working in equine practice. In 2000 I moved into emergency work and then into small animal general practice. I joined Riverside on a part time basis is 2016. I work 1½ days a week along side running a fully certified organic farm with my husband where we keep chickens, sheep and cows.
I originally became a vet because I wanted to work with horses, although we had no animals growing up. It was not until my teenage years that I started riding and became interested in horses. I have moved into other areas through my career and I am now particularly interested in internal medicine and I get satisfaction from helping the patients and improving their quality of life.
Outside of work, my time is mainly taken up with working on the farm, but when I get chance I like to go walking and cycling, or riding the horses. This year I am hoping to walk one of the long distance paths in the UK. I love travelling too, especial to unusual and adventurous places. And, of course, I regularly travel home to Belgium to visit friends and family.
I seem to have acquired the nickname of Cake Lady at work because I often bring one in. I must admit I do have a sweet tooth and I definitely enjoy a good cup of coffee and a cake.
